The Vikings have a rich history when it comes to exploration. A lot of people know they’ve plundered different territories such as Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Iceland/Greenland. However, studies show that in fact they did reach as far as North America. There’s a very interesting diversity within the Vikings. Although, they are more agricultural type of people, they did become astute with trading, piracy and mercenary activities. In Central Europe, a lot of Scandinavians in the Viking Age created settlements along the Baltic Sea because it was a great area for trading. They were also able to create good trade routes that made porting much easier. The type of ships they used were great for trading purposes, and a lot of the Viking had great skills for sailing as well as land and sea warfare. This was especially useful for warding off poorer citizens. The influence of the Vikings even appears in modern English. The Norse influence was great in the formation of early standard English language. Over 1000 words in English were formed from the Norse language. The great Scandinavian influence comes from East England as there is still some influence along different parts such as Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.

For those commencing research of their Nordic Or Norse Roots it is important to know that the seafaring Vikings celebrated Nordic cultural heritage and history are of a tradition of Scandinavian ‘clan’.

Stemming from a tradition distinct in orientation from the Scottish clans whom were sovereigns of named territories, the Scandinavian clan’s obligation to honour persisted in family name and acceptance into the group. Derivation of Viking surnames typically conclude with a –ung or -ing at the end.

Due to the fact that Scandinavian societies tended to retain impeccable legal records such as census, immigration, military and family records such as birth, death and marriage certificates, government repositories are good resources for finding out more about your Nordic heritage. The internet is a good place to start the search.

Databanks like Ancestry.com may assist in the genealogical search. Capabilities include government verification and advanced patented digitization processes that provide high-resolution digital scans of existing records. Professional staff transcribe the recorded information from the original language to English, and publish it for user access in a format that is searchable easy to copy for personal record.

Who knows? You may turn up the ancestor of a legendary Viking warrior or king.

Most people are proud of their Scandinavian heritage and whether they consider themselves Swedish, Danish, Finish or Norwegian they know they have a rich history of Vikings and strong forefathers. Many people in the United States will never be able to travel to one of these Countries, but they know that their blood line includes some strong people from these Countries and they like to brag by wearing t-shirts that might have one of the Scandinavian flags on it. They also boast about their heritage on the back of their cars with stickers.

Some families enjoy lefsa, Sweadish meatballs or Codfish balls on a regular basis while others eat them for holidays. Most people feel it is important to hand down these traditions to future generations and remind them they have strong roots. A favorite tradition that is easy to try at Christmas is singing around the Christmas tree. The Danish families usually have real candles on their trees which isn’t always possible for most people, but holding hands and singing traditional Christmas Carols is. Heritage is important and it should be passed down to future generations because it gives a since of belonging and self worth. Take some time and look into your heritage and you will be happy with the results and hopefully a little surprised at what you find.

Norway is a country that is located in Northern Europe. One of the many things that this country is known for is its customs. Norwegians greet other people with a smile, firm handshake and direct eye-contact. They also shake hands with people that they meet for the first time and when they say good-bye. Norwegians also have a custom of bringing a gift when they go to someone else’s home. They also do not believe in giving carnations or flowers because they are used at funerals. Norwegians do not send out formal invitations, but use word of mouth to get the news of an event across.

At parties, Norwegians always make toasts with alcoholic beverages, but not with beer. After making the toast, woman are required to put down their glasses. Norwegians have a custom of eating everything with utensils and that includes sandwiches. When a person finishes eating, he or she is required to put the fork down across his or her plate. Other Norwegian customs include being negotiable, maintaining eye contact while speaking and not interrupting others while they are speaking. Respect is also highly valued in this culture and women are treated better in this country than they are in many other countries.

One of the more difficult things to do is share your Norwegian heritage and traditions with your family. Life often gets so busy that we forget to educate our families and ourselves about the importance of our Norwegian heritage. One of the best ways to teach old family traditions is to showcase the culture through food and storytelling. When you talk about the food ancestors use to eat and why, it gives children an opportunity to learn and taste your history.

Not all of the foods are easy to make and some are not that much fun to eat. Norwegian food starts with fish. As far back as the legendary Viking warriors, fish was an important part of the diet. Explaining this and allowing them to taste things like smoked salmon, gravlaks, and codfish is a great way to teach them how important water was to the Norwegian people.

Moose, reindeer, duck, and other types of fowl are also perfect example of the wild game people relied on. Rich sauces made from juniper berries and lingonberries can complement these dishes. Since it can be difficult to find all of these ingredients in the United States, find some cookbooks and make a conscious effort to make a Norwegian Meal for the entire family. If you have it on a Norwegian holiday you can teach the family even more about their Norwegian heritage.

Nordic history is rich with tradition and adventure. The Scandinavian people are one of the oldest cultures around with evidence of Scandinavian and Nordic people existing even in the stone age. Since then, the history of the Nordic people has gotten even more exciting with the Vikings. The vikings went on some amazing voyages much earlier than any other European cultures, and produced many brave and fearless warriors and kings. The vikings raided, colonized, and explored large parts of Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and even North America. This is a rich and exciting cultural heritage to come from, to say the least. However, most people don’t know their roots very well, and can only go back in their genealogy a few generations. Fortunately, there are many new methods available because of science and the connectivity of the internet that have helped us to find our roots again. For example, there are many genealogy sites that you can go on that will give you a long family tree from public records and other peoples’ research. You can even get a DNA test now to tell you exactly what percent of your blood comes from what roots in the past with just a simple google search. It has never been easier to find your Norse roots.
